Professor Alison Smith Mem.MBA
Prof Smith is the Marine Biological Association Governor representing the University of Cambridge. She studied for a BSc in Biochemistry at the University of Bristol, and then carried out a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. After a brief period in scientific publishing, she returned to Cambridge as a postdoc, and then took up a lectureship in Plant Sciences. She was appointed as Professor in Plant Biochemistry in 2007. Prof Smith's research interests are focussed on several aspects of the metabolism of plants, algae and bacteria, firstly to understand the pathways, and secondly to be able to exploit the biosynthetic potential of these organisms. She founded the Algal Biotechnology Consortium in Cambridge together with other algal biologists and engineers, to tackle some of the challenges in exploiting algae for biotechnological purposes. She is a member of several journal editorial advisory boards, as well as scientific advisory and strategy panels in the area of algal biotechnology.
