Dan’s research focuses on understanding patterns of benthic (seafloor) marine biodiversity and the processes that drive them. He is particularly interested in how temperature and other environmental drivers influence the structure and functioning of shallow-water benthic ecosystems. This work predominantly focuses on kelp forest ecosystems in Europe and Australia. He also uses sessile invertebrate assemblages on settlement panels as experimental models, and has examined the response of Antarctic benthos to ice disturbance.
