Postdoctoral Research Associate

Serena Flori finished her PhD in the Cell & Plant Physiology Laboratory in Grenoble (France) in the frame of an ITN Marie Curie called AccliPhot. The main research aim of this consortium was to investigate and understand acclimation mechanisms in photosynthetic organisms and to employ this understanding to optimise and upscale biofuels production.

By combining physiological, biochemical and biophysical studies Serena focused her studies on the understanding of the mechanisms of light utilization in two model organisms: the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the green microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. During her PhD she unveils the complex architecture of a diatom chloroplast providing a more detailed understanding of the structural bases for photosynthesis and she also acquired new insight into the metabolic regulation of photoprotection in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Serena’s project at the MBA is under the supervision of Dr Glen Wheeler and Professor Colin Brownlee, and will focus on new live cell imaging techniques.
