Eliane has been part of the MBA’s Education team since 2014 and has been involved in a number of projects. Currently, she works as an Education Assistant in the Sea Change Project, which is a Horizon 2020 funded initiative aiming ‘to bring about a fundamental “Sea Change” in the way European citizens view their relationship with the sea, by empowering them – as ‘Ocean Literate’ citizens – to take direct and sustainable action towards healthy seas and ocean, healthy communities and ultimately – a healthy planet’. Within this role, Eliane will be focusing particularly on formal education, helping coordinate the development of a network of Blue Schools in the UK and beyond. Eliane is also the Young Marine Biologist Project Officer, helping develop this new membership category for young people who are passionate about the sea, and coordinates a group of long-term volunteers as part of a project which aims to build a picture of recreational uses across the Plymouth Sound and Estuaries European Marine Site.
Before joining the MBA, Eliane worked and volunteered in aquatic sciences research in the UK and Portugal. Her love of the sea and of all things natural shaped the pursuit of a career dedicated to understanding the mechanisms that support life, and is now driving a keen desire to engage people from all walks of life with the natural environment through outreach and education. As a result, Eliane is also currently attending the MSc in Learning for Sustainability at Plymouth University which she hopes will provide a platform to further develop ocean literacy in our communities.
