After completing a BSc in Bio Ecology and a two years MSc in Marine Biology at the University of Cagliari (Italy) both with 110/110 cum laude, Flavia obtained a one year Master in Bioinformatics in collaborating with the Marine Biological Association of the UK (Plymouth, UK) in 2013.
She is currently a PhD student at the University of Cape Town, in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Department under the supervision of Professor Edward P. Rybicki and Dr Declan C. Schroeder from the MBA. Based at the MBA, her PhD project aims to address viral diversity in surface seawater, from the Southern Hemisphere Oceans. Using bioinformatics to analyse NGS data, we aim to bring new insight to global patterns of viral diversity, ocean water currents and alternative more efficient sampling and sequencing protocols.
Her PhD project includes:
*DNA extraction from water samples
*Illumina NGS data analyses
*Python – R – Biolinux
