Gideon is a PhD student from the University of Reading, hosted at the Marine Biological Association, studying RNA viruses infectious to the European honeybee, Apis mellifera. Gideon graduated from the University of Southampton in 2010 with a BSc in Marine Biology and Oceanography and following this he undertook a Masters of Research at the University of Plymouth and the MBA. For his Masters thesis he studied potential persistent viral infections in the coccolithophore, Emiliania huxleyi which stemmed a strong interest in viral ecology.
Supervised by Dr Declan Schroeder (MBA) and Professor Ian Jones (UoR), Gideon’s research is now centred on the deformed wing virus (DWV) quasispecies infectious to honeybees. With skills in molecular biology and bioinformatics, Gideon’s research has led to the discovery of a novel DWV variant and the implications with respect to RNA virus evolution and emerging diseases are currently being investigated.
