Seagoing ResearchTechnician

Sophie is the Sea-going Research Technician at the MBA, working within the MBA Sepia ship’s team. She contributes to data collection and processing of the long-term time series database and supports MBA staff, students and external organisations in carrying out any sea-going aspects of work.  Sophie also assists the aquarist Alix Harvey, in maintenance, animal welfare and breeding in the MBA Seawater Laboratory.

Graduating from the University of Plymouth with a BSc Marine Biology in 2010 and MRes Marine Biology in 2011, Sophie went on to work as a research assistant within the Sims Behavioural Ecology Laboratory, helping tag and track marine predators in various locations. Since becoming a full member of staff in 2014 she is trained in a wide range of sea-going skills including fish ID, scientific sampling techniques and as a deck hand on the MBA Sepia. Furthermore, Sophie uses her position as a Retained Fire Fighter for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to support health and safety aspects of ships training.
